Managing problematic visual media in natural hazard emergencies

In natural hazard emergencies, visual media (images, videos) document and convey the possible risk, impact, severity of hazard. Issues arise when visuals being circulated, at scale speed, are manipulated, fake, or from an unrelated event location. These problematic can impact how communities interpret risk emergency. Further, present information (i.e. a cue) in conflict with what emergency services agency is instructing public to do, it lead uncertainty confusion community on act. This research identifies four specific types that common emergencies Australia. We propose combination reactive proactive strategies be employed by agencies manage extent these visuals.
